ZUPCO hikes fares
Government has approved ZUPCO’s proposal to increase fares effective from the 18th January 2021.
In a letter seen by Community Podium dated 13 January 2021 and written by Secretary for Finance and Economic Development G.T Guvamatanga said treasury notes the proposed fares for both buses and omnibus which is neccesiated by the reduced carrying capacities due to COVID19 pandemic and the resulting constraint on revenues which negatively impacts on operations.
In this regard, Treasury hereby approves the review of bus and omnibus fares as follows;
The new prices for local routes which were charged ZWL$16 will now be going for ZWL$30, those which were charged ZWL$24 will now be going for ZWL$45 and those which were charged ZWL$32 will now be going for ZWL$60.
Tafadzwa Goliati, President of the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) said, we are not happy with this development. Passengers’ salaries remain stagnant while prices of many essential services and basic commodities keep going up.
“This is a big blow to passengers who are already struggling to make ends meet” he added.
ZUPCO CEO Everisto Madangwe was not reachable for a comment.
