President Mnangagwa encourages preservation of Pupu as a tourist attraction

Yesterday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa inaugurated the Pupu National Monument in Lupane. He urged the people of Pupu and Lupane to embrace and protect the newly reconstructed site, recognizing its potential as a significant tourist attraction.
During the ceremony, President Mnangagwa also commended General Mtshane Khumalo and the Imbizo Regiment for their historical role in defeating Alan Wilson and his men. It was at this battle on December 4, 1893, that the decorated General Mtshane Khumalo commanded the Ndebele Amabutho and decimated 33 British soldiers led by Major Allan Wilson. All the 34 britons died in the battle.
In his address, President Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of preserving the Pupu National Monument and its historical significance. He stated, “The Pupu National Monument stands as a testament to our rich heritage and serves as a reminder of the bravery and resilience of our ancestors. It is our duty to safeguard this site and promote it as a valuable tourist attraction, contributing to the growth of our local economy.”
Speaking about the Imbizo Regiment’s pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s history, the President remarked, “We must remember and honor the brave souls like General Mtshane Khumalo and the Imbizo Regiment, who fought tirelessly for our nation’s independence. Their heroic efforts should inspire us to work together to build a prosperous and united Zimbabwe.”
Bubi District’s Chief Mtshane Khumalo, the esteemed descendant of General Mtshane and President of the Chiefs Council, expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for bestowing this honour. He also emphasized the need for further research and development of the monument.
Chief Mtshane Khumalo stated, “I am deeply honored by President Mnangagwa’s gesture in commemorating General Mtshane’s legacy through the establishment of the Pupu National Monument. This monument will serve as a symbol of our heritage and unite our people. I call upon the government and researchers to continue investing in the development and preservation of this historical site, ensuring its educational and cultural significance endures.”
The president also officially opened Pupu Clinic which is a short distance from the memorial site.
