Hope Ignites for PWDs as African Disability Protocol ratified

A wave of celebration has swept through Zimbabwe’s disability rights community following a momentous decision – the ratification of the African Disability Protocol by Parliament. This historic move marks a turning point for inclusion and paves the way for a brighter future for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the country.

In response to this momentous event, a group of dedicated activists shared their thoughts on the impact of the protocol’s ratification. Sukoluhle Mhlanga expressed her optimism, saying, “I commend this move as it signifies a beacon of hope for the full inclusion and active participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society.”

Tsepang Nare echoed these sentiments, adding, “We would be even prouder if this treaty were formally deposited at Addis Ababa. The ratification of the protocol is a welcome move and it is to be praised because it recognises the African context and it addresses the key and fundamental issues that are synonymous with Africa especially issues around ritual killings of people with albinism that is rampant in countries like Tanzania, Malawi amongst others hence signing and ratifying this protocol is a true commitment to uplift and promote disability rights within the African context and it is a splendid job and we look forward to have this treaty deposited at Addis Ababa “This statement emphasizes the significance of this ratification not only at a national level but also within the broader African context.

Furthermore, Tariro Gurure lauded the ratification process, stating, “This is a commendable move in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities in our country.” Her words highlight the importance of acknowledging and upholding the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities within Zimbabwean society.

The Deaf Zimbabwe Trust (DTZ) also released a statement recognizing the ratification as a landmark achievement in their continuous efforts to promote and safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities in Zimbabwe. The African Disability Protocol, which seeks to ensure the full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities, is hailed as a critical instrument towards achieving this goal.

Moreover, the protocol addresses pertinent issues that affect individuals with disabilities across the African continent, including harmful practices like ritual killings and the recognition of conditions such as Albinism that are often overlooked within the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
