Sporting event in Tsholotsho advocates against drug abuse and promotes healthy living

The John Landa Nkomo Memorial Cup Cluster games at Sipepa High School in Tsholotsho exceeded all expectations, making a resounding impact on the community by advocating against drug abuse and promoting healthy living.
Spearheaded by the Deputy Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities and Tsholotsho South MP, Musa Ncube, the event carried the theme “Fostering Drug-Free Communities and Economic Empowerment Through Sports,” effectively educating and enlightening attendees about the perils of drug abuse and the significance of making informed life choices.
Aligned with the Zimbabwe Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan, the event resonated with the recent initiative launched by His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, focusing on preventing drug use, providing treatment and rehabilitation, and addressing the root causes of addiction in order to enhance the health, well-being, and productivity of individuals, families, and communities in Zimbabwe.
The cluster games and drug awareness campaign harnessed the power of sports to set a new standard for advocacy, stirring a sense of purpose and determination among the youths and leaving a lasting impact on their lives. The gala drew dignitaries from the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, as well as representatives from the Tsholotsho Rural District Council, Provincial Council, and local government councillors, underscoring the event’s significance and relevance. This strong support assured attendees that they are not alone in their struggles and that they have the backing and resources necessary to overcome any challenge.
Major General (RTD) Sibangilizwe. S Khumalo, speaking as the Guest of Honour, delivered an inspiring keynote address, emphasizing the youth’s pivotal role as the future of the nation and urging them to reject illicit substances in favor of a brighter, more fulfilling life. He praised the attendees, stating, “I am thrilled to see so many young people gathered here, eager to make a difference in your lives. Your presence is testament to your desire for a bright future. I commend you for taking the first step towards a drug-free life. I urge you to continue on this path, to support one another, and to spread the message of hope and resilience.”
Furthermore, Major General (RTD) Sibangilizwe. S Khumalo highlighted the President’s commitment to combat drugs and substance abuse, assuring the attendees of the government’s determination to provide the necessary support, resources, and services to overcome drug abuse and nurture the potential of the nation’s youth. He concluded by reaffirming, “Together we can make a difference!”
The event also saw the Ward 6 Women’s Netball team and Ward 4 Men’s football team emerging victorious, progressing to the next round as symbols of the community’s resilience and spirit.
As the vibrant games came to a close, the air remained filled with echoes of laughter, cheers, and inspiring stories—a testament to the power of community and the human spirit.
