Tshabangu claims CCC state funding
Self-proclaimed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu has penned a letter to government advising it to disburse the party’s share of the political parties fund into his care.
Political parties that garner five percent or more of the national vote in an election are entitled to proportional funding under the Political Parties Finance Act.
Taking into account the outcome of the August elections, only the ruling Zanu PF and CCC can benefit from the public fund.
Tshabangu instructed the government to pay out the funds in his name, into a CBZ account.
“I am writing in terms of section 3(1) as read with section 3(3) of the Political Parties (Finance) Act (Chapter 2:33) to request the statutory allocation and disbursement of the funding that is due to the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) political party, which participated in the 2023 harmonised general election, in which it garnered sufficient seats to qualify for the funds.
“Accordingly, we kindly request your good offices to process and disburse the allocation that is due to our party in terms of the Act,” he wrote.
Political parties in Zimbabwe are by law forbidden from receiving donations from foreign governments and organisations.
Tshabangu has recalled 15 CCC MPs and over 60 councillors, in a move seen by some quarters as deliberate to wrest the opposition party from party leader Nelson Chamisa.
If Tshabangu has his way, Chamisa will again lose out on the government funding as he did when government chose to give the funding to Douglas Mwonzora after the 2018 election.
