People with Disabilities call for inclusivity

By Wendylene Dube

People with disabilities from Plumtree recently took part in a Zoom meeting hosted by the Centre for Youth Development and Transformation(CYDT) which focused on how people with disabilities can become more visible and included in their communities.

The meeting created a space for participants to share their lived experiences and challenges. Many said they still feel left out of key community activities and decision-making processes.

Nomalanga Dube , a young woman living with albinism, said: “Being visible is more than just being seen. It’s about being involved, respected, and given the same opportunities as everyone else.”

Bongani Moyo, a youth participant, added: “Some of us have ideas and skills to offer, but we are not invited to platforms where our voices matter. This meeting showed us we are not alone.”

The session was facilitated by a CYDT representative, who encouraged participants to continue advocating for inclusion and to use storytelling and media to raise awareness in their communities. The meeting showed that visibility for people with disabilities isn’t just about being present but about being heard, valued, and included in shaping the future.
