Tsholotsho residents express mixed feelings over Starlink

Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe – The recent launch of Starlink’s satellite internet connectivity in Zimbabwe has elicited mixed reactions from residents of Tsholotsho, with some welcoming the development and others expressing concerns over affordability.
Nkanyezi Ndlovu, founder of the Tsholotsho Community Parliament, welcomed the initiative, saying, “As a citizen and as a director of Tsholotsho Community Parliament, we welcome the decision by the government to authorize StarLink by Elon Musk to operate in Zimbabwe.”
Ndlovu emphasized the importance of connectivity for development, stating, “We have a connectivity coverage of less than 30% in Tsholotsho, and that compromises us a lot in terms of development. Therefore, we are optimistic about this development.”
However, Ndlovu acknowledged that the monthly subscription fee of US$50 may be steep for many residents. “The monthly subscription seems too high for most of our people, but for those who can afford it, it is an opportunity.”
Madida, a resident, highlighted the need to have more knowledge and information about starlink as she questioned on the operations of starlink to assist Tsholotsho residents make informed decisions.
Busani Sibindi, Software developer urged residents to exercise caution when purchasing Starlink kits to avoid potential scams or substandard products. However he optimistically highlighted that the launch of Starlink in Zimbabwe will improve internet connectivity in rural areas.
“Starlink has just been granted an operation license which is meant to ease network challenges in Zimbabwe . This will help close digital divide in the rural and urban areas if implemented well”
As the rollout continues, residents of Tsholotsho and other rural areas will be watching closely to see how Starlink addresses these concerns of both connectivity and affordability.
