Bulawayo journalists were recently equipped with knowledge on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the newsroom.
The journalists, hailing from various media houses, convened at The Bulawayo Club where they engaged in a comprehensive learning session organized by the Centre for Innovation and Technology (CITE) in collaboration with Content Creators Zw. This one-day event aimed to shed light on the integration of AI in journalism practices.
In an exclusive with Community Podium, Mbekezeli Mabuza from ZimFact expressed his appreciation for the opportunity, emphasizing how it enhances the quality of his work and aligns it with global internet advancement standards.
“This enables reporters to uncover hidden trends, identify emerging stories, and produce insightful articles that resonate with readers. Moreover, AI can assist journalists in fact-checking, language translation, and even generating automated reports for routine news updates.”
His sentiment was echoed by Sithatshisiwe Vuma, who stressed the importance of the journalism profession embracing and implementing AI technologies to stay relevant in the digital age.
“The internet has revolutionized various professions, making them more digitalized and efficient. In this era of technological advancement, it is essential for journalists to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) to stay competitive and seize new opportunities in the rapidly evolving media landscape. By incorporating AI tools into their workflow, journalists can enhance their reporting capabilities, streamline data analysis, and reach a wider audience with personalized content.”
It is noteworthy that CITE stands out as a pioneering news media organization that has fully embraced AI tools. They have developed two AI journalists, Alice and Vusi, each assigned to different programs within the organization. This proactive approach demonstrates CITE’s commitment to innovation and staying ahead in the rapidly evolving field of journalism. As more professions adopt AI technology, it is clear that organizations like CITE are leading the way in leveraging these advancements to enhance their journalistic practices.
