Villagers bemoan exorbitant transport fares

Residents from Tsholotsho have bemoaned exorbitant fares being charged by transport operators plying different routes in the district.
The economic situation in the country has made life even more difficult particularly for people in rural areas. People have to travel long distances to access cheaper goods at the business centre or in towns.
One elderly community member, Sibonile Maseko said she was now avoiding travelling for whatever reason.
“We have resorted to asking bus drivers to bring us groceries from the Tsholotsho business centre as we cannot afford to travel. The fares are very high and it’s tough for those of us who are not employed,” said Gogo Maseko.
Another community member who is pregnant, Gertrude Ngwenya said if I’m transfered to Tsholotsho District Hospital because of any reason I won’t be able to manage to travel because the fares are very high for me.
“May the Government do something about this situation because we can’t afford to go anywhere even if there was a funeral. We heard that in Bulawayo the Government has availed ZUPCO buses that are ferrying commuters to different areas within the city at very low costs. We would be happy if the Government could do the same for us”, said Ngwenya.
