Sports meets culture as Kasambabezi Binga Marathon and BaTonga Cultural Festival return

The 7th edition of the Binga Kasambabezi Marathon (BKM) occurring on the 28th of September 2024 is just around the corner, and this year, it’s being held in conjunction with the vibrant BaTonga Cultural Festival. The marathon will be held under the theme “The Power of Sports in Promoting Gendered Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change.”
According to Recent Ncube, the chairperson of BKM, over 200 athletes, including two Kenyans, have registered to participate, and BKM is having engagements with partners in terms of the procurement of regalia and other logistics.
“Our event is no longer a national event but rather a regional one. We opened the door for our neighboring countries and beyond, and I can assure you that we are getting positive results. So far, we can confirm that two Kenyan nationals have registered, and we are expecting a lot more.”
“We have also engaged with local stakeholders to provide quality accommodations, food, and a welcoming environment. As Binga, we promise to deliver an unforgettable event,” said Ncube.
Ncube highlighted the event’s commitment to quality and community engagement, ensuring that participants and visitors enjoy a memorable experience. Partnered with Kulima Mbobumi Training Center (KMTC) and the Anglican Community, the marathon event will address spectators on the challenges posed by the El Nino-induced drought and malaria awareness.
He also said that the marathon aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, economic growth, and awareness about human and wildlife conflict. Environmental management is also a key focus, with plans to install makeshift bins and engage with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) to ensure a sustainable event.
Meanwhile, the second edition of the BaTonga Cultural Festival which will be held alongside the 7th edition of the marathon, promises to be an exciting celebration of Tonga culture. David Mungombe, one of the organizers, highlighted that the festival will have diverse offerings, including traditional performances, crafts exhibitions, and a BaTonga museum gallery. The festival will also feature performances by renowned artists like Bio Mudimba.
Mungombe emphasized the importance of cultural exchange and community engagement, encouraging everyone to participate and volunteer.
“We welcome everyone to join us in promoting cultural exchange through performances and dialogue. While resources are limited, we invite all to be part of this exciting event,” said Mungombe.
