UZA condemns unjust arrest of CCC members

The United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) has vehemently condemned the recent arrest of approximately 70 youths at the residence of a participant Jameson Timba in Avondale, Harare, on June 16, 2024.

The heavy-handed police action, targeting a reportedly peaceful meeting organized by the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the suppression of political dissent in Zimbabwe.

“The authorities’ accusation of an unsanctioned gathering is a blatant attempt to suppress political opposition, a tactic that goes against the constitutional rights of the people,” stated UZA spokesperson in a direct quote. “The reported violent turn of events and the subsequent arrests highlight the oppressive tactics utilized to stifle the voices of dissent and disregard fundamental constitutional rights.”

The incident, part of a broader pattern of intimidation and political repression in Zimbabwe, has drawn attention to the urgent need for reform and the protection of fundamental human rights. UZA stands in solidarity with the fellow arrested citizens and has proposed a comprehensive action plan to address the ongoing challenges:

” UZA will advocate for legal assistance and the release of unjustly detained citizens,” the spokesperson emphasized. “We will also develop an agenda for legal reforms to safeguard political freedoms and prevent such abuses in the future.”

“In our Party Manifesto, UZA commits to reforming the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) to ensure that it cannot be used to unfairly target opposition parties,” the spokesperson continued. “We will work to create an environment where political participation is protected and encouraged. Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in driving change, UZA will implement programs to empower young people politically and economically,” the spokesperson added. “This aims to ensure that they have the tools and platforms to advocate for their rights and become active participants in the development of Zimbabwe.”

UZA stressed their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of all Zimbabweans and emphasized the importance of respecting citizens’ rights and political diversity. They denounced the aggressive crackdown on peaceful gatherings as a direct attack on democracy and justice, calling on all Zimbabweans to unite in support of a fair and equitable society.
