Villagers build police base

News filtering in from Chidobe Ward, a stone’s throw from the majestic Mosi-oa-Tunya, paints a picture of a community taking a stand against crime. In a move lauded by security officials, residents of Chidobe have just completed construction of a brand new police base at Chisuma Business Centre.
This proactive effort comes after a surge in crime, particularly during the festive season, that left residents feeling like extras in a rowdy Western saloon brawl.
Headman Marathuza Ndlovu, addressing the ZRP Victoria Falls District Crime Liason Committee Meeting at a local lodge, beamed with pride. “Crime rates in Chidobe Ward, especially during the holidays, were getting out of hand,” he declared. “So, we, the leaders, decided to take matters into our own hands. We pooled resources to build sub-police stations in major ward centres to clamp down on this festive season madness!”
Apparently, the Zimbabwe Republic Police gave the project the green light, and local stakeholders chipped in with building materials to get it off the ground.
“The Chisuma base is up and running,” announced Marathuza, a wide grin spreading across his face. “We’ve even provided comfortable accommodation for the officers, complete with running water. Next stop, Lupinyu Business Centre near the Victoria Falls Airport – another base is on the way!” The Headman added that Chidobe Ward encompasses six villages and three bustling business centres: Chisuma, Chidobe itself, and Lupinyu.
Residents in Chisuma are already celebrating. Given Mlotshwa, a local resident, perfectly captured the jubilant mood: “Finally, a police base is here. Festive seasons here are like warzones – fights, injuries, and even killings! Criminals used to scoot across the border to Zambia, but with the boys in blue right here, escaping won’t be that easy anymore.”
Lupinyu villagers echoed the sentiment. Zamani Hadebe, a resident there, lamented the transformation of their business centre into a “lawless haven” during the holidays, especially with the influx of truckers taking a break. “Drunk revellers are constantly starting brawls,” he complained. “A police base here would be a lifesaver. Arrest these rowdy folks and throw them in jail! Crime hurts businesses and destroys everyone’s peace of mind.”
Superintendent Sibanda, representing the Zimbabwe Republic Police Officer Commanding Victoria Falls District, attended the meeting and showered the community with praise.
“We appreciate your support in tackling crime,” he declared. “Together, we can significantly reduce crime rates in the area. Remember, if you see something, say something!”
The Chidobe Community development inititiative story is about a community standing strong against crime. As Victoria Falls thrives on tourism, a safer Chidobe Ward benefits not only residents but also visitors seeking a taste of Zimbabwean hospitality.
