Schools opening day confirmed

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo has confirmed that schools will open for the first term on January 9 for the 2024 first term as Form Ones are expected to travel to their respective boarding schools on January 7 for orientation and induction.
At a press conference earlier today, Minister Moyo put paid to confusing messages around the opening date.
“We have observed that there has been confusion surrounding the date when schools are opening. People have said schools are opening on the January 2, 2024, but the correct position is that schools are opening on the January 9. It gives parents adequate time to prepare for schools’ opening.
“We want to advise Form One students who have enrolled in boarding schools that they are likely to go to their schools on Sunday January 7 so that they have time to go through orientation and induction at their respective schools,” he said.
The Minister issued a warning to schools that are in the habit of illegally coercing parents to buy uniforms only from them. He noted that while schools are free to sell uniforms, parents must not be compelled to buy uniforms from schools.
“Another important point I want to raise is that there are schools that are forcing parents to purchase uniforms at those schools, it remains illegal for any school to demand students or parents to purchase uniforms from those schools, our parents are free to buy from any shop of their choice.”
Moyo further advised schools to accept payment of school fees in both foreign currencies as well as the local currency. This comes at a time schools are reportedly rejecting the local currency.
