CCC pulls out of parly, councils
Opposition CCC president Nelson Chamisa has withdrawn all party members of parliament and councillors following the recall of 15 CCC MPs by self-proclaimed secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu.
Tshabangu wrote to parliament instructing the recall of 15 MPs and 17 councillors citing that they had ceased to be members of the party. Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda obliged by notifying the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission that there are 15 vacant seats in parliament.
In response, Chamisa yesterday issued a 14-day ultimatum demanding that Mudenda revokes the recalls, failure of which would result in more dire measures taken by the party.
“Until this issue is resolved, CCC MPs and councillors will disengage from parliament and councils.
“When we say disengage, we do not mean that they have withdrawn.
“We are saying no business will be transacted until remedy and justice are done through a mechanism we have agreed.”
“We have disengaged but withdrawal is also on the cards and even plunging the country into a deeper crisis because we already have a constitutional crisis but there is going to be a worse one if there is no justice on the issues that are at play,” said Chamisa.
It remains to be seen whether Mudenda, a Zanu PF stalwart, will acceed to the pposition’s demand.
Mudenda struck again earlier this week by docking salaries of CCC MPs for two months and suspending them from the next six sittings in parliament after they protested against the recall of 15 of the colleagues.
Chamisa also revealed that the party is on a diplomatic offensive and was also pursuing local dialogue with Zanu PF.
“There has to be a political settlement, a political dialogue immediately, to be able to deal with the issues of the disputed election,” he said.
