Makwika earns right to represent district

HWANGE- The MAKWIKA Primary School Under 14 soccer team edged Baobab Primary School of Victoria Falls 2-1, to lift the National Association of Primary Heads(NAPH) trophy.
Lwendulu Old Ground hosted the pulsating cluster final played on Friday. The victory earned Makwika the ticket to represent Hwange District in the provincial competitions to be played in Bubi on a date to be advised.
Makwika made their intention known three minutes into the match through the hard running Isheanesu Chabangu. Chabangu received a deft pass from impressive midfielder, Waira Ncube. He outpaced defenders before unleashing a stinging shot into the nets with Baobab goalkeeper,Siyabonga Tshuma flat footed.
Baobab came back from the break a rejuvenated side.Some good build up play which started with Mukudzei Zhou winning the ball in midfield ended with Muzundi Nyathi tapping the ball home leaving from close range.Baobab raided Makwika’s goal but found the defence well marshalled by Godknows Sithole uncompromising.
It turned into a sea-saw battle until Makwika killed the match as a contest in the dying minutes of the match.Iden Phiri had some neat ball exchanges with his teamate, Tinashe Sithole near the edge of the box. Sithole dribled past a forest of defenders before sending a perfect inch pass to Chabungu who rifled the ball past Tshuma in goals for Baobab to score a double.
Makwika Primary School was presented with a shield by the District Schools Inspector, Mr Walter Moyo. Speaking during the handing over of the shield, Mr Moyo said he was impressed by the level of brilliance exhibited by the learners. He urged the boys to work harder up to national and regional level.
NAPH resumed ball games this term after they were granted a reprieve to compete by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary education following the low COVID-19 infection rate in the country. All sporting activities in the country had been suspended since 2020 as a result of spikes in Covid-19 cases.
