The government says it is concerned by xenophobic attacks targeting Zimbabweans in South Africa and urges Zimbabweans to cooperate with the Zimbabwean Embassy for their safety.

The call was made by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana during a media briefing hosted by the United Nations (UN)  in partnership with the Ministry of Information Broadcasting Services and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of International Day  of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

“The government notes with concern the killing and torture  of Zimbabweans in South Africa. We urge all our nationals who wish to escape Operation Dudula  to get in touch with the Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa so that necessary steps may be taken to make sure they escape safely,” said Mangwana.

Operation Dudula was blamed for the recent gruesome murder of Zimbabwean, Elvis Nyathi in South Africa.

United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator

Mr Edward Kallon called for  urgent attention to  conflict resolutions based on the common goal of peace and development.

“We have to prioritize solidarity,  treat each other with humanity , see the next person as a person regardless of  a number of differences that we may have,” he said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fedrick Shava, who attended the meeting virtually, said the country remains committed to working together with other countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)s, in keeping with the government’s  2030 vision which embraces conflict resolution.

International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is  commemorated annually on the 24th of April  to address numerous challenges that include  climate change, geopolitical tensions, humanitarian, and migratory crises, all of which the UN General Assembly says require global attention.
